First Time Hair Colour: What to Expect at The Hive Salon
Jul 8, 2026 · 4 min read

If you've never coloured your hair before, it's normal to have questions — and a few concerns. At The Hive Salon, first-timers are welcome and we take the time to walk you through everything before we touch your hair.
The Consultation Comes First
Every colour appointment at The Hive Salon begins with a consultation — not a sales pitch. Your stylist will assess your hair condition, ask about your lifestyle, and understand what result you're looking for before recommending anything.
No colour goes on your hair until you're comfortable and clear on what's happening.
The Most Common First-Timer Questions — Answered Honestly
What colour suits me?
This is the most common question we get from first-timers, and it's a good one. The answer depends on your skin tone, your lifestyle, and how much maintenance you're willing to commit to.
At The Hive Salon, we use a colour chart and a colour meter during consultation to identify your exact skin tone — helping us recommend shades that genuinely suit you. You don't need to walk in knowing exactly what you want. That's what the consultation is for.
- ✓Warm skin tones suit caramels, coppers, and chocolate browns
- ✓Cool or neutral skin tones suit cool browns, coffee brown, and ash-adjacent shades
- ✓Most Asian skin tones look flattering in chocolate brown — it's our most-requested shade for a reason
Can I get ash colour without bleaching?
No — and this is important to understand before your appointment.
Asian hair has naturally high dark pigment levels. Without bleaching first, no colour can lift the hair light enough to achieve true ash or grey tones. Any stylist who tells you otherwise is not being honest with you.
If you want a cool result without going ash — and without bleaching — chocolate brown and coffee brown are your best options. They read as cool and sophisticated on Asian hair, and they hold their tone without fading to orange or yellow over time.
I want long-lasting colour that doesn't fade to yellow or orange
This is completely achievable — the key is choosing the right tone from the start.
Warm tones like caramel or copper are designed to be warm, so fading reads as a natural progression. If you want colour that stays cool and doesn't shift to warm tones over time, we recommend cool browns — chocolate brown, coffee brown — using Milbon Colour, which is specifically formulated for Asian hair.
Paired with sulphate-free shampoo, cool water washing, and UV protection, cool brown shades hold well in Singapore's climate.
