Soft Rebonding vs Premium Soft Rebonding: Is It Worth the Upgrade?
Oct 25, 2026 · 5 min read

Premium Soft Rebonding may be worth the extra cost if your hair has been weakened by bleaching, highlighting, frequent colouring, or repeated rebonding—and is still suitable for straightening.
If your hair is healthy and suitable for standard Soft Rebonding, you may not need the upgrade. In fact, our Premium formula is not our preferred option for healthy, resistant curly hair.
The difference is about choosing a straightening approach your hair can tolerate, rather than paying more for a straighter result.
Why Your Hair’s History Matters
Hair that has been bleached, highlighted, repeatedly coloured, or frequently rebonded may already have a weakened internal structure.
That does not mean every person with coloured hair needs Premium. However, previously treated hair needs careful assessment before another chemical service—especially through the lengths and ends, where treatments may have overlapped.
Hair can look reasonably smooth on the outside while being too fragile to tolerate another round of standard rebonding. At The Hive Salon, we consider both your hair’s current condition and its treatment history before recommending a service.
What Can Happen If Fragile Hair Is Rebonded Again?
If hair is already too weak for standard rebonding, processing it again can cause severe dryness, a rough or “fried” texture, and breakage.
This is more than an inconvenient bad-hair day. Severely damaged lengths cannot simply be returned to their original condition with a salon treatment.
Conditioning and repair products may improve how damaged hair feels and behaves, but they cannot make it untouched hair again. Severely damaged sections may need to be trimmed away gradually as new hair grows.
If we assess your hair as unsuitable for standard Soft Rebonding, we will not recommend proceeding simply because that is the service you initially wanted.
How Is Premium Soft Rebonding Different?
Our standard Soft Rebonding uses an alkaline formula. Our Premium Soft Rebonding uses an acidic-pH formula with lower reducing strength, selected for suitable hair that has already undergone chemical processing.
In plain language, the Premium formula takes a gentler approach to changing the hair’s internal bonds. This gives us another option for certain previously treated hair that would not tolerate our standard formula well. We may consider it for:
- Bleached or highlighted hair.
- Frequently coloured hair.
- Hair that has undergone repeated rebonding.
- Previously straightened lengths and fragile ends.
These are reasons to assess Premium—not a guarantee that it is suitable. Some hair is too compromised for either service.
Although the formula is gentle in its approach, Premium is still chemical straightening. It is not simply a conditioning treatment, and it does not reverse existing damage.
Before
AfterDoes Premium Mean Damage-Free?
No. Removing alkaline agents from a formula does not remove every potential source of damage. Your hair’s starting condition, the straightening ingredients, processing time, and heat application still matter. That is why the assessment and technique are as important as the formula.
Our reason for recommending Premium is to select a more appropriate approach for suitable, chemically sensitised hair. It is not a promise that severely damaged hair can always be straightened safely.
Do the Steps Differ?
Both services follow the same main stages: consultation, application of the straightening formula, processing, rinsing, heat straightening, and neutralising.
Premium takes longer because the formula needs more processing time. For shoulder-length hair, allow approximately:
| Feature | Soft Rebonding | Premium Soft Rebonding |
|---|---|---|
| Formula | Alkaline | Acidic-pH, with lower reducing strength |
| Main consideration | Hair suitable for standard straightening | Previously chemically treated hair that remains suitable for straightening |
| Appointment time | Around 3 hours | Around 4 hours |
| Starting price | From $188 | From $418 |
| Typical interval before considering another service | Around 6–12 months | Around 6–12 months |
Times are estimates. Hair length, volume, condition, and the work required can affect your appointment. All prices are nett, with no GST. Your stylist will confirm the final price before proceeding.
When Is Premium Worth the Extra Cost?
Premium may be worth considering when you want straighter hair, but your previous chemical treatments have left it unsuitable for our standard rebonding formula.
For example, someone with highlighted hair and previously rebonded lengths may need a different approach from someone with healthy, untreated hair. If the highlighted lengths remain suitable for straightening, Premium may be an option after assessment.
The value is having a formula option better suited to that hair’s condition, rather than expecting extra straightness or a longer-lasting result. If your hair cannot tolerate either process, paying for Premium does not change that. We would recommend postponing straightening.
When Is Standard Soft Rebonding the Better Choice?
Standard Soft Rebonding may be the appropriate choice when your hair is healthy and can tolerate our alkaline formula.
Our Premium formula has lower reducing strength and does not work as well on healthy, resistant curly hair. Choosing it simply because it sounds better may not give you the straightening result you want.
Premium is not a universal upgrade. Different hair needs different formulas.
Does Premium Last Longer?
No. At The Hive Salon, we generally advise a similar 6–12-month interval for both services, depending on your hair growth, aftercare, and how you want to maintain the result.
Rebonding changes the treated hair; new growth comes through with your natural texture. You may therefore notice your roots becoming different from the straightened lengths over time. Premium’s purpose is formula suitability, rather than extending the time between appointments.

Which One Should You Choose?
- Consider standard Soft Rebonding if your hair is healthy, suitable for alkaline straightening, and you want a smooth, straight finish.
- Discuss Premium Soft Rebonding if your hair has been bleached, highlighted, repeatedly coloured, or frequently rebonded, and you want to find out whether it can still be straightened.
- Postpone chemical straightening if your hair is too fragile for either option.
You do not need to make that decision alone. Tell us about your previous services and the result you want so we can explain the appropriate options.

Not sure which service to choose?
You do not need to choose the formula yourself. Send us a recent photo of your hair, the result you would like, and details of your previous chemical treatments. We can discuss your options, with final suitability confirmed during an in-person consultation.
