If you've just had a rebonding treatment and you're already thinking about colour — you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get at The Hive Salon.
The short answer: yes, you can colour your hair after rebonding. But timing matters.
How Long Should You Wait?
Wait at least one week after your rebonding treatment before colouring. Your hair needs time to fully set after the chemical process. Colouring too soon — before the bonds have stabilised — can affect both your rebonding result and your colour outcome.
After one week, your hair is ready for colour.
What Colours Work Well on Rebonded Hair?
Rebonded hair takes colour beautifully because the cuticle is smooth and even — colour applies consistently and looks clean. At The Hive Salon, we recommend:
- ✓Cool tones — chocolate brown, coffee brown, and ash-adjacent shades using Milbon Colour, which is specifically formulated for Asian hair
- ✓Warm tones — rich browns, caramels, and coppers using our organic colour range
One thing to note: achieving ash or grey tones without bleaching is not possible on Asian hair. Asian hair has high dark pigment levels that conventional colour cannot lift without bleaching first. If you want a cool, non-yellow result without going ash, chocolate brown or coffee brown are your best alternatives — they stay true without fading to orange or yellow.
Can You Do Rebonding and Colour on the Same Day?
We do not recommend combining rebonding and full colour in the same appointment. Both are chemical processes — doing them together puts unnecessary stress on your hair. A gap of at least one week between the two gives your hair time to recover and ensures better results from both services.
What About a Roots Retouch After Rebonding?
If you only need a roots retouch — covering two inches or less of regrowth — this is a lighter colour process and generally well-tolerated after the one-week waiting period.
Why Rebonding Always Comes Before Colour
If you're planning both rebonding and colour, rebonding must always come first — without exception.
The reason is simple: the rebonding process uses chemicals that will strip and fade any colour already on your hair. If you colour first and rebond after, you lose your colour. You would need to recolour again after rebonding anyway — wasting both time and money.
The correct sequence is always:
This ensures your rebonding sets properly and your colour goes on fresh, even hair for the best possible result.
